Goal Setting Tips
The start of a new year often brings a sense of renewal and the desire to set New Year’s resolutions. It’s a natural time to reflect on the past year’s achievements and challenges while looking ahead with fresh optimism. However, by the sixth week of the year, many resolutions are abandoned. This happens largely because goals are often too ambitious or vague, lacking a clear plan for success. As motivation wanes and life’s demands take priority, consistency becomes a challenge, leading to frustration and giving up. As you set your goals for 2025, here are five tips to help you move past that six-week hurdle and stay on track.
Your goal needs to matter deeply to YOU—not to your friends, family, or even your doctor. While a doctor might recommend losing weight for health reasons, it’s crucial to identify a personal “why” that resonates with you. Maybe shedding weight will help you move more freely to play with your kids or ease joint pain so you can enjoy an active lifestyle. Whatever your reason, it should reflect what truly matters to you and aligns with your values. When your goal is meaningful to you, it becomes much easier to stay committed.
Believing in yourself is essential. While it may sound cliché, research consistently shows that people who genuinely believe they can achieve their goals are far more likely to succeed. If self-confidence doesn’t come naturally to you, don’t worry—there are ways to build it. One of my favorite strategies is to find yourself a cheerleader. Do you have a friend with similar goals? Consider becoming each other’s biggest supporters. A cheerleader not only provides constant encouragement but also acts as a valuable support system when challenges arise, helping you stay motivated and on track.
Your goal needs to be realistic and achievable. It’s easy to set overly ambitious expectations, but doing so can leave you feeling defeated if you fall short. For example, if you’re working to improve your endurance, you might consider running 20 minutes every day. While well-intentioned, that goal may be difficult to sustain when life inevitably gets in the way. Instead, consider scaling it back to something more flexible, like running five days a week, allowing room for busy or unexpected days. Better yet, set a range: “I’ll aim to run at least four days a week, strive for five, and if I have extra time and energy, I’ll go for six.” This approach balances ambition with practicality, keeping you motivated and on track.
A big goal is simply a series of smaller, achievable steps. Breaking down large goals into manageable increments is one of the most effective ways to stay on track. For example, if your goal is to lose 50 pounds, focusing on 5-pound milestones or 10% increments makes the journey feel less overwhelming and more achievable. Each small victory gives you a reason to celebrate while keeping your eyes on the bigger picture. Incremental progress truly adds up! You may have heard the phrase, “Strive to be 1% better every day.” At first, a 1% improvement might seem insignificant, but over time, these small changes compound, creating a substantial transformation. In fact, if you improve by just 1% each day for a year, you’ll end up 37 times (TIMES not percent!!!) better than when you started. Consistency, no matter how small the steps, is the key to achieving big results.
Prepare for setbacks—it’s not a matter of if they’ll happen, but when. Life has a way of throwing curveballs: an unexpected business lunch might disrupt your eating plan, an illness could sideline you from the gym, or a rough night’s sleep might leave you barely getting through the day. These challenges can derail even the best-laid plans, but they don’t have to stop your progress entirely. Take time now to think about how you’ll overcome these hurdles. Will you lean on your support system? Reflect on the small goals you’ve already achieved? Or remind yourself that progress is never a straight line? One of my favorite reminders comes from F. Scott Fitzgerald: “Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.” By having a plan to recover from setbacks, you’ll be better equipped to stay the course and keep moving forward.
